Industrial scale composting trail of compostable products
Envar is part of a government funded project known as the Compostable Coalition. The project will trial and evidence a closed loop solution for the effective collection sorting and industrial scale processing of compostable packaging and compostable products. The coalition consists of composting companies, compostable packaging providers, packaging users, universities, and consultants.
This project is high profile and has gained the interest and support of key stakeholders and policy makers.
The project started in May this year and will conclude after two years. Envar is currently getting ready to manage the industrial scale composting trail which will commence in December and conclude in March. The trial will involve various compostable product feedstocks coming into our Cambridgeshire site where they will be sorted and analysed. The material will then be mixed with existing food and green waste feedstocks and put through our in-vessel and open windrow process to track and monitor the materials degradation during the trial period. In addition, each compostable product will go through the trial in a net bag to allow us to track the degradation process for each product type. Small volumes of the material will also be tested in our lab equipment. There will also be a control trial conducted in parallel using our existing food and green waste feedstock. The material will be tested post screening for quality and to check for any contamination including plastics.
