Envar is pleased to be working in partnership with waste management Paper Round and compostable packaging company Vegware to provide a dedicated compostable packaging solution in London and Brighton. Now, more than ever, foodservice has shifted to more disposable items for packaging to increase hygiene levels amid coronavirus fears.
This new service will ensure that disposable packaging does not have to mean an increase in plastic waste or pollution. Disposable food packaging can be part of an environmentally friendly process.
There is a way to be both environmentally friendly and covid-19 compliant.
The Partners:
Vegware are the specialists in plant-based compostable foodservice packaging. They have an in-house environmental team which helps their clients implement composting schemes to reduce their carbon footprint and make a positive impact on the earth.
Paper Round is a total waste management company which services over 6,000 customers in London, Brighton and Sussex. They will be collecting the compostable packaging and transporting it to the composting site.
Envar will provide the final piece of this puzzle by transforming the food waste packaging made by Vegware and collected by Paper Round into compost at our in-vessel composting facility in Cambridgeshire. Compost will be produced within 7 weeks and can then be used in horticulture, agriculture and landscaping.
In short, this new service will see Vegware’s compostable packaging collected as a separate waste stream and quality checked by Paper Round. It will then sent to Envar’s in-vessel composting facility to be made into high quality PAS 100 compost. A highly effective, environmentally friendly, closed loop solution for disposable food packaging.
The launch of this new service follows a successful trial scheme conducted over the past 12 months in London. The scheme involved food waste from corporate and government offices including Bartlett Mitchell and the Foreign Commonwealth Office.
Our Involvement:
Managing Director of Envar Composting Ltd, Andy Sibley, received the waste from the trial scheme and commented:
“we are very pleased with the way Vegware’s products work through Envar’s composting process. We are also pleased with the quality of the material we have received from Paper Round. Working together with these key partners and their customers, we can continue to reduce contamination through this exciting new waste stream. Compostable food packaging is another way we can reduce the use of single use plastics and help to improve the health of our planet. The compost we produce can be used to nourish soil with a slow release of vital nutrients needed for healthy growth. Our compost also improves soil structure which, in turn, reduces flood risk.”
