As part of the Total Waste Management offer EnVar is able to offer Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling. EnVar has recently secured a contract for monthly collections for WEEE items using secure specialist containers for bulking of the WEEE.

The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Regulations 2006 introduced the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive to UK law in January 2007 with the aim to reduce the amount of equipment being produced and to create the incentive to reuse and recover.

The reliance on electronic and electrical equipment is still increasing within businesses, and with added value contracts and technology improving overnight the need for new electronic and electrical equipment is increasing.

EnVar is able to recycle the WEEE to close the loop and securely wipe any equipment and return the materials back to the manufacturers.

For more information please call the enVar head office on 01487 849840.

Hundreds of keen gardeners from across Dacorum took advantage of the good weather last Sunday to pick up free bags of compost at Dacorum Borough Council’s Compost Giveaway Event at Cupid Green Depot.

Cupid Green Depot was set up to hand out 10 tonnes of free compost from 10am, however by 9.45am cars were queuing to get into the Depot. Council staff and Community Payback teams worked together to shovel and bag the compost all day. In just five hours a staggering total of 650 bags of compost were filled and handed to residents.

Councillor Julie Laws, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability said “The Compost Giveaway Event was a huge success and it was great to see so many residents come along and enjoy this free giveaway. It just goes to show that by putting the correct materials in our green wheeled bins we can create a really useful product, compost, from the materials that would otherwise have been sent to landfill. We hope that events like this will encourage more people to start composting either at home or by placing their food waste, garden waste and cardboard in the green wheeled bin”.

In 2010-11 Dacorum’s residents helped divert approximately 15,000 tonnes of food waste, cardboard and garden waste away from landfill and into the green wheeled bins. The compost that was given away was made from the contents of the boroughs green wheeled bins and was kindly provided by Envar, the company responsible for composting the contents of the green wheeled bin into nutrient rich compost.
In addition to the giveaway, Council Officers were on hand to give out useful information and tips on how to get started with home composting and were handing out free kitchen kaddys to residents.

More information about the latest offers on home composting bins and recycling your household waste are available on www.dacorum.gov.uk/recycling or alternatively contact the Council on 01442 228000 and ask for Waste Services.

Gardeners can now purchase soil conditioning compost produced using Milton Keynes’ food and garden waste at the council’s three Community Recycling Centres (CRCs).

EnRich Compost, produced by EnViridis, is a soil improver for spreading on flower beds, vegetables patches and raised beds – it is not suitable for bedding plants in pots and tubs.

It is organic, peat free and made from 100 per cent recycled materials, offering good water retention and soil enriching nutrients.

Available in 60 litre bags costing £4 each – or three bags for £10 – there is no limit of sale per customer. Residents can buy EnRich Compost at all three CRC sites at:

Bleak Hall, Chesney Wold,

Newport Pagnell, North Crawley Road,

New Bradwell, Newport Road.

All sites are open from 8am to 8pm April to September.

Food and garden waste placed in green waste bins is sent to the EnVar (sister company to EnViridis) composting facility in Cambridgeshire where it decomposes, under controlled conditions, into a soil-like substance which is used as a soil conditioner.

The compost meets PAS 100 – a quality standard for compost which ensures the product is safe – and the Compost Quality Protocol.

Joanne Payne, head of business development at EnVar, said: “We are delighted to be working with Milton Keynes Council and to be able to close the recycling loop by providing soil improver back to the residents who provide us with their food and green waste for recycling.”

Liberal applications of the soil conditioning compost dug into vegetable patches, borders or raised beds will improve drainage, enhance soil-based nutrients and encourage strong growth and root development.

With moisture holding capacity, the compost will help build a healthy layer of essential organic matter right where the plants need it.

It can also be used as a mulch around shrubs and tress to help suppress weeds.

It is not suitable for Ericaceous plants such as some Heathers, Caudelias, Azaleas and Rhododendrons.

Andy Hudson, Milton Keynes Council’s head of environment and waste, said: “We would like to thank all our residents who help produce the soil conditioning compost by making the most of our weekly food and garden waste collection service.

“We are delighted that we can now offer it for sale, enabling residents to use our organic waste to help make their gardens thrive.

“Food waste really helps make good compost – so if you’re not recycling your food waste, why not start now?”

Dacorum Borough Council is giving away free compost for residents to use on their gardens, to celebrate Compost Awareness Week (Sunday 6 to Saturday 12 May 2012).

Dacorum residents can pick up high quality compost, made from the contents of the borough’s green wheeled bins, by bringing their own bags (maximum of four per household) to:
Cupid Green Depot, Redbourn Road, Hemel Hempstead, HP2 7BA,
on Sunday 13 May, between 10.00am and 3pm.

As the compost will be given away on a first come first served basis we advise residents to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Councillor Julie Laws, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability said “Using the green wheeled bin not only keeps waste out of landfill, but also helps provide a really useful product, compost. Giving this compost back to those people who helped create it is recycling at its best, and is our way of saying ‘Thank You’ for everyone’s excellent recycling efforts throughout the year. Please do come along, bring a bag and pick up your free compost.”

Across Dacorum, residents recycle around 15,000 tonnes of food waste, cardboard and garden waste in their green wheeled bins each year, diverting the waste from landfill. This green waste is composted into nutrient rich compost by Envar, who are supporting compost awareness week by giving it back to residents for use in their gardens.

In addition to free compost, residents will be given useful information and tips on how to get started with home composting, including special offers on home composting bins.

Those who would like more information on the event should contact Dacorum Borough Council on 01442 228000 and ask for Waste Services.

The Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson and Business Development Manager Emma Lucas, from enVar met this week to officially launch the new partnership for composting of the borough’s organic waste.

During January 2012 enVar was awarded a contract by Bedford Borough Council to manage all organic waste collected in the borough. This is waste which is collected in the green lidded wheeled kerbside bins as well as the organic waste delivered to the household waste recycling centre atBarkers Lane. This replaces the previous contract inherited from the former County Council and will deliver savings of £100,000 per year.

The contract will run from 1st April 2012 until at least 31st March 2017 and is expected to recycle 14,000 tonnes of organic waste each year. The terms of the agreement also ensures the organic waste is treated locally by Growing Beds, who are based in Ravensden.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “In addition to continuing to provide a valued service to local residents through the composting of organic waste from kerbside collections and the popular Household Waste Recycling Centre atBarkers Lane, this agreement saves local taxpayers £100,000 per year. It also maintains the ongoing relationship with an important local business, Growing Beds in Ravensden.

“This is an excellent deal for the Council and local taxpayers.”

Arthur Ready, Managing Director from, enVar, added: “We are delighted to be working with Bedford Borough Council and local organic recycling company Growing Beds. Together we will be assisting the Council in achieving their overall recycling targets of 60% by 2020”

The resulting finished compost will be produced to PAS100 specification and sold as a non waste product into the retail and commercial sectors. In addition enVar will work with the Local Authority to provide composts for distribution into community based schemes.
